Identity checks deserve real care. A shared last name alone proves nothing, so compare identifiers the record actually supplies. Keep arrest, booking, and release dates apart. Each marks a separate event. Note where you searched and when, because records change and an old result can be mistaken for current custody. A missing booking photo means little, since the service may omit it, access rules may limit it, or another office may hold the file.
How Sturgis Arrests Work
Sturgis is the largest incorporated place in St. Joseph County. The Sturgis Department of Public Safety patrols around the clock through its Police Division. City officers open the first record when they investigate or make an arrest. That file may hold the incident report, the officer narrative, citations, and other municipal material. It is not a jail booking record.
If the county jail accepts someone, the Sheriff's Department takes over the custody trail. Booking is jail intake. Staff record identity, alleged charges, property, custody status, and bond or hold data. Release or transfer can happen instead. The county file and the city file answer different questions. A name missing from a possible roster proves nothing about whether the arrest occurred. The court file tells the rest of the story.
Where Sturgis Records Appear
Start with official sources before news archives or private databases. The city site offers links for police, records, traffic crashes, policies, services, and press releases. No daily arrest roster or booking-photo gallery appears there. The county Sheriff site also lists no feed labeled recent bookings or 24-hour arrests. A vendor roster does exist at a county-specific address. The Sheriff does not visibly confirm it. Treat the roster only as a lead.
| Channel | Record | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Sturgis Public Safety | Police services and selected releases | Official city source |
| Sturgis Records | Incident or arrest report | Official request route |
| County Sheriff | Custody and jail record | Official county contact |
| Vendor roster | Search fields if active | Unconfirmed interface |
| WLKM and WTVB | Selected events | Incomplete news sources |
| Mugshots.com | Old private reposts | Unofficial and stale |
Private pages may lag on updates or mix up people with similar names. They never replace a police record, jail confirmation, or court file.

The city agency page shown here is navigation, not a list of arrested people or current bookings.
Find a Sturgis Arrest Booking
A careful lookup follows the record from city contact to county custody to court. Timing matters, so start with the newest window. Arrest time, booking time, and public display can differ. Jail intake often lags a street arrest. The county publishes no guaranteed update schedule and no verified 24-hour feed.
- Check 24 Hour Arrests for same-day source status. Record when the search was made.
- Search the possible vendor roster narrowly. Treat it as unconfirmed unless the Sheriff verifies it.
- Call the Sheriff at (269) 467-9045 for time-sensitive custody questions.
- Request the city report from Sturgis and a jail record through county JustFOIA.
- Check 3B District Court or MiCOURT for later filings and disposition. Use VINELink Check for custody alerts.
The wider Arrest Log explains the multi-day trail. The county-wide arrest guide separates custody, court, state supervision, and records channels. A blank roster result can mean release, transfer, a spelling mismatch, delayed data, or no county-jail lodging. It never proves the arrest failed to happen.
Request Sturgis Arrest Records
The Sturgis Records Division and FOIA page names Megan Gorsuch as coordinator and routes requests through NextRequest. Weekday hours run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. No incident number is required. A request may simply give a person's name, an approximate date, a place, and the police agency. The ordinary response period is five business days. A ten-business-day extension is possible.
The fee schedule says police-report charges can vary and lists a per-disk photo charge. Ask for a current quote and name the exact record. That fee does not mean Sturgis holds or must release a county booking photograph. A municipal arrest report belongs with Sturgis. A jail booking photo belongs with the county instead. A narrow date range helps staff find the file and cuts the risk of unrelated material.
The official Sturgis FOIA source shows the municipal request route and the records contacts.

The official FOIA page locates the request process but promises no booking photo release.

Sturgis Press Has No Daily Feed
Sturgis Public Safety treats news as news, not as an arrest log. Its Press Releases page names a media contact and little else. Nothing there promises daily updates. A release covers one chosen event. It can never stand in for the booking record the jail keeps. An arrest report an officer writes is separate too. Those are separate documents with separate purposes. Blending them invites wrong assumptions about who is actually in custody.
Local outlets add another layer. WLKM's police category and WTVB carry selected Sturgis and St. Joseph County stories that may name an agency, a date, or a case lead. One caution applies: reporters sometimes write that charges are being sought. That is an investigative stage. It can come before any filing or an eventual dismissal. Trace a story back to Public Safety, the Sheriff, and the court. A news photo is not a booking photo unless the source says so outright.
After a Sturgis Arrest
Jail status and court status split quickly. Someone can drop off the roster after release. The city's report and the court file stay put. An arraignment opens the case, where charges are read and release terms may be set. Bond is the amount or condition attached to that release. A disposition is the court's recorded end point, whether dismissal, plea, acquittal, or conviction.
- Police incident record
- The Sturgis account of the event and officer action.
- Booking record
- The county jail intake file if lodging occurred.
- Court docket
- The procedural history and final disposition.
- VINELink notice
- A custody-status alert where an agency supplies data.
For an outcome, go where outcomes live. Check 3B District Court and the statewide Michigan court search. A state-prison or supervision record sits in MDOC OTIS, not the county roster. Each system does one narrow job. A blank in one place never erases a record kept elsewhere.
Sturgis Agency Contact Details
The city's general line is (269) 651-2321. Police matters run through (269) 651-3231. Those differ from the records coordinator's number. On the public-safety site, Traffic Crash Reports, Policies and Procedures, Services, and Press Releases each sit apart from the FOIA route. Pick the right category. That one habit keeps a crash request out of the incident-record line. It also stops a policy document from being mistaken for an arrest record.
Media questions go elsewhere. The press page names Public Safety Director Ryan Banaszak. He takes media questions at rbanaszak@sturgismi.gov for event-specific information. That contact does not replace NextRequest for a durable municipal record. Sturgis counted 11,082 residents in the 2020 table behind the city map. The figure explains why this is the county's largest incorporated-city page, nothing more. No city source offers a live arrest total. Population and police activity should never be mixed into an arrest-rate claim.
